It is the coldest January Vermont has seen in years. All month the temperature hasn't broken zero. It's Daniel's twenty-third birthday, but it might not be much of one. Months ago he lost his job silk screening Vermont Ski Like a Girl tee-shirts. Katrina had always imagined sleigh bells and snowshoes in the north. But she isn't made for this kind of cold, the kind that makes her feel hollowed-out and fragile, as if her bones were made of glass.
